Chapter 19

Damiano

I wake up the next morning to a savory aroma and soft sunlight. It’s quite a peaceful way to wake up. Slowly, I sit up and blink my eyes a few times, realizing that Mia isn’t in bed next to me. I don’t even remember passing out last night after we got back home.

My heartbeat pauses for a second when I remember last night. Not even just the passionate sex. The talk we had in the club. How I opened up to her and told her things that only a few people know.

In the beginning, I warned myself not to get close to her or get attached to her. It was easier when we were clashing and not getting along, but now, things are different. She’s changing. I’m changing.

I don’t feel the need to hide myself in my room away from her because she already knows the darkest parts of me and still hasn’t run for the hills. Why is that? Why isn’t she trying her hardest to get the hell away from someone like me?

For some reason, she sees good in me. I think that says more about her than what it says about me. She’s the type who forgives. Who sees silver linings. It’s so easy to see the bad, but she looks deeper than most.

She sees a part of me that’s been hidden away for years. My weak spot.

After drawing in a deep breath, I get out of bed, pulling on a pair of dark gray chinos and a white collared shirt. I miss my old suit attire, but I have to dress my part. I head out of my bedroom and venture into the kitchen to see Mia standing in front of the stove. “Morning.”

Mia looks over her shoulder, wearing a large, white shirt with a few faint paint stains and a pair of black shorts that barely poke out from under the shirt. A smile crosses her lips. “Oh, hey. Did I wake you?”

Maybe it’s the fresh smell of coffee and sizzling bacon or the morning sun illuminating the kitchen, but the atmosphere just feels warm and homey. I didn’t grow up in a cozy home full of good memories, but I suspect that this is what my childhood should’ve felt like.

I shake my head and walk over to the coffee maker, grabbing a mug from the cabinet up above. “You didn’t. Want some coffee?”

“Please.” Mia gracefully flips over the eggs she’s cooking before turning her attention to the strips of bacon sizzling in another pan. She moves them onto a plate covered by a paper towel.

I grab another mug and pour us both some coffee. I’ve seen her use some sort of caramel creamer that’s in the fridge, so I grab the bottle and pour some into her coffee. Curious, I pour a little in mine before handing her mug to her. “How long have you been up?”

“Not too long. I just wanted to get a head start. I want to paint today,” Mia replies as she shuts off the stove and grabs two plates.
